Sales Tax Calculator
Use this when you know the sticker price before tax and an approximate combined rate (state + county + city). It answers “what do I actually pay?” without opening a spreadsheet.
Figures stay in your browser; rates vary by location, so treat the percentage you enter as your own best local estimate.
Sales tax
Pre-tax price × combined rate. Not jurisdiction-specific.
How this is calculated
We multiply your pre-tax amount by the rate you enter (converted from a percent to a decimal) to get sales tax, then add that to the base for a cash total.
Example: $80.00 at 8.25% → tax $6.60, total $86.60. Rounding at the register can differ by a cent; this tool uses standard floating-point math on your inputs.
Use this tool for
- Checking a contractor’s quote when tax is quoted separately from labor and materials.
- Splitting a group purchase when everyone owes their share including local tax.
- Sanity-checking an e-commerce cart before you hit checkout in another state.
Common questions
Why doesn’t this look up my exact city rate?
Local rates change by address and special districts. Enter the combined percentage you expect (from a receipt, tax table, or merchant settings) so the math matches your situation.
Is tax calculated on the pre-tax price or on a discounted total?
This tool assumes the amount you enter is the taxable base before tax. If a coupon reduces taxable price first, use that reduced number as your pre-tax amount.
