How it works

What this result means

The sale price is what you pay after the discount is removed from the original price. Savings is the dollar amount removed. Knowing both helps you compare deals across items with different original prices.

Formula:

Sale price = Original × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100)

Where:
Original = full (pre-discount) price
Discount% = percentage being removed
Savings = Original − Sale price

  1. Divide the discount percentage by 100 to convert to a decimal
  2. Subtract from 1 to get the fraction you pay
  3. Multiply by the original price
  4. Savings = original minus the result

Example

$80 item, 25% off: Sale price = $80 × (1 − 0.25) = $60. Savings = $20.
